Oud Wood opens up as medicinal, slightly spicy and peppery. And something in it reminds me of aged leather. (Leather isn't listed, but it is definitely there).

There's an unusual mushroom quality to Oud Wood. I assume this is the synthetic agarwood that everyone speaks of when trying this fragrance. It's like a mushroom wrapped in plastic in a leather satchel. Oud Wood comes across as synthetic, too good to be true, another reason why I like it.

This isn't one of those "natural" Middle Eastern smelling ouds. It wears as a haze of leathery, smoky woods with a small amount of Indian spices. It's woodsy with a sandalwood softness and sweet tonka bean and amber. It's rich and sweet and the woods add some dimension.

Overall, Oud Wood isn't "loud" like other oud scents, like from Montale. One of the most rare, precious and expensive ingredients in a perfumer's arsenal, TOM FORD's Oud Wood fragrance is a rich, warm scent to intense the senses. Exotic rose wood and cardamom give way to a smoky blend of rare oud wood, sandalwood and vetiver, while soothing tonka bean and amber add a touch of sensuality. The purpose of Oud Wood is to present Oud in a rather unfettered form, but to also button it up nice and structured, so it appeals to Western tastes. Oud Wood has the medicinal facets of agarwood, but not the dirty animalic barnyard facets that it often takes when paired with rose or leather.

This dry, semi-sweet, muted oud is paired with a few other woods in the note pyramid, and graced with a top of Sichuan pepper. The opening of Oud Wood is that pepper, saddled with rosewood and cardamom, two 70's throwback stalwarts that make Oud Wood feel older in style than it is with their aromatic spicy dustiness. The starring oud note shows soon after, paired with creamy sandalwood and slightly smoky vetiver, which carries on the dusty/chalky nature of Oud Wood. There's also tonka and vanilla to round out and sweeten the skin finish, but it's not enough to purge the mind of a can of Comet.

The smokiness reminds me of the atmosphere of an ancient incense-filled temple during some spiritual function, where the walls, floor and roof soak in burnt olibanum oil veil.

Although both woody, incense is very different from cedar, sandalwood and guaiac woods. So, it makes sense that I would like Tom Ford Private Blends Oud Wood. It wears like a close haze around the skin. Women can most definitely pull this off, don't think this is a "man's" scent. Some may argue with me, but this is one of those scents that wears wonderfully on me, a lady.

I think it's one of the sexiest fragrances that I own. It's a hazy, woodsy fragrance with a soft, sweet base. No florals, making this a very appealing wood.

I think the lack of florals is what makes people think of this as a masculine fragrance. It's a strong and bold fragrance without being too overpowering. It does lean more masculine but I still think it's unisex enough for a woman to wear. It has a lovely mix of vanilla, amber and sandalwood.

The oud in the scent is noticeable but on the softer side when mixed with the Tonka Bean and Vanilla. It wears very well on the skin and like most Tom Ford fragrances I've tried, lasts all day long without fading. I recommend reading the reviews on Fragrantica, Basenotes.net, Kafkaesque and Temptalia. The very first impression is of rose and sweet, nutty cardamom.

There is also Szechuan pepper, earthy vetiver, and hints of rich vanilla as if from a freshly cut Madagascar bean. Oud Wood is now primarily a vetiver, cardamom and oud fragrance with the rose becoming increasingly fainter. Sandalwood makes its appearance, pushing the rose completely off the stage and blending with the vanilla, cardamom and the earthy vetiver in a truly lovely manner. At times, it seems as though Oud Wood is mainly a vanilla vetiver with hints of oud and spice. At other times, it's mostly sandalwood with vetiver. The perfume fluctuates and undulates, showing just how well-blended it is.

I should add that I'm using Oud Wood for more than a year now to the point that I think it has become my signature scent(although I didn't believe in signature scents before). I find it the most versatile and easy to wear scent from the Private Blend collection . Also it's amazing for blending(my favorite is Arabian Wood+Oud Wood combination).

It lasts long on my skin but its not too potent. My favorite part is its dry down with creamy tonka bean and sandalwood. On the finish, the woody background prevails, sometimes almost green, complex, dry, which gives the perfume a vaguely austere elegance. The creamy and powdery aromas of tonka pod, spicy vanilla, and sensual amber give the fragrance a dense trail of warmth and sensuality. There are faint traces of vanilla and tonka.

The base is not a sweet and gourmand bomb, and the oud occasionally appears fleeting, but the ground is mostly just sandalwood and vetiver. Using that bit of amber is done masterfully, and if they used more, the bottom would become too sweet and powdery a deal. A very virile, woody and at the same time gentle and masculine drydown. It is a calmness that is willing to be approached, especially for winter.

It can be uncomfortable at first, but after a few attempts, you simply fall in love with the scent. Métallique is grossly underrated in the Tom Ford lineup, especially as a scent for men. It blends floral notes with crisp bergamot, spicy pink peppercorn, and a strong, creamy vanilla-sandalwood base. It's one of the brand's more "classic" scents in terms of its wear, with a universally pleasing cast . I think that people expect all Tom Ford fragrances to scream and shout, whereas this one plays by the rules and earns perfect marks for it. Ultimately, Oud Wood is intended to be a pleasant amber-based scent with a strong plonk of oud, surrounded by filler woods and spice to keep it in the semi-formal/semi-romantic zone.

The Comet association with the dustiness of the stuff is unfortunate, but not a total deal breaker. However, the fairly weak projection and below-average longevity for an eau de parfum are, so I can't really recommend this. As an early American take on the wood once exclusive to the Middle East, it's decent enough, but really shouldn't be more than $50 for a 1.7oz/50ml bottle, and not somewhere near $200.

What compounds this worse is the hype behind this particular Private Blend, along with Tobacco Vanille , as the two must-haves for men from the house. I received a sample of this perfume along with an order I recently placed. You can't imagine my reaction when I saw it was none other than Tom Ford Oud Wood. Yes, because this perfume is on my wishlist, together with Faking Fabolous.

I love potent aromas, everything related to the word "animal", understood as something that comes from the way of the fauna and the flora. Mineral, metallic, resinous, smoky, leathery, medicinal scents drive me crazy. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that ingredients such as leather, moist earth, rain, resins, petrichor, balsams, syrups, and amber are all my cup of tea.

By the way, about Oud Wood, this fragrance differs from most of the Arabian colognes, meaning it does not rely on the well-known formula of oud-rose or oud-saffron pairs. Instead, it is planned differently without too much sweetness. It doesn't smell like any other Oud out there, and I think that's why I love it. Because it smells different, like I've never smelled any other perfume like this before. It is a light, subtle, masculine fragrance that I thoroughly enjoy, but wouldn't purchase at retail. The unisex cologne offers up a breathtaking combination of smooth and spicy ingredients to spark your energy and boost your mood. Among the bold ingredients are tobacco leaf, spicy notes, vanilla, cacao, and woody notes. The cologne's complexity is further deepened with the dried fruits, which add just a hint of fruit to the mix. Picy but this bouquet quickly evolves after the top notes volatilize.

There is a brief moment maybe of a few seconds, after the top notes dissipate where you get a floral scent like lavender or the like, but not a feminine floral like jasmine. If I were to speculate, based upon the rarity of Oud, I imagine the showcase of Oud in this fragrance to be an accord. If I were to wager a guess to the composition of the Oud accord, it would be a leather accord, the 'woodiness' to come from birch and or moss and the smokiness to come from Oak or the like. My interpretation of Oud wood is more 'incensy' and not so smoky and leathery. Every time I've worn this I CANNOT stop smelling my wrist, and it has great sillage and longevity is 6+ hours from one spray.

Oud is my favorite note and it is definitely prominent in this, but in a very friendly, NOT HARSH way. I can smell the rosewood and vetiver, but the vetiver is also not as masculine as I'm used to, and that's a good thing. This is a soft unisex fragrance that wears well on either gender. Nothing sharp, harsh, or headache-inducing here, just a very well-blended gorgeous scent. By far one of my favourite Oud fragrances.

I agree that Oud Wood is pretty unisex, at least for women who are used to wearing unisex frags, particularly dry, woody ones. I have often read reviews by the guys on Basenotes asserting that scents I love to wear are absolutely extremely masculine. In this cologne you should be able to detect a variety of smells. The first impression comes from grapefruit, orange blossom, and sage, so the fragrance opens up with a herbal, aromatic profile. This continues into an intriguing blend of nutmeg, orris root, and pimento as the middle notes which are perfectly balanced with the rich woody notes of vetiver, oakmoss, and amber. This is the kind of cologne that will make you feel like a sophisticated man who isn't afraid of outdoor adventures and has a rugged personality.
